Why you shouldn’t be ashamed of the words 'self-help'

Over the years the phrase self-help appears to have gathered some rather negative connotations, in fact I have seen a huge cultural change in book shops in recent years changing the name of their sections from self-help to motivation.
Think about the episode of Sex and the City when Charlotte wants to buy a self-help book but when she goes to the self-help section in the book shop she is met with a litany of ‘sad’ women, leading her to flee the shop and order the book online.
I love Sex and the City and I know that scene was supposed to be humorous and while I get it, I don’t agree with it.
If there is an area in your life that you want to change, improve or just learn more about and you think a book might help then why wouldn’t you want to do just that?
Fuck the stigma, helping yourself is better than doing nothing.
However, I do think it’s important to remember that just reading any book is not going to change your life, it’s the actions that you take as a result of what you have learned that is really going to make a difference.
Don’t be ashamed or shy of self helping. You should be proud that you are taking the steps to the happiest and most fulfilled life that you can possible lead.
