5 Steps to improve Self-discipline

Self-discipline is having the motivation, responsibility and accountability to yourself, to take steps to complete an action which is for the highest good of oneself.

When embarking on anything new behaviour or action in our lives self-discipline is really important and can also be really difficult, especially if the subject matter is something you have really struggled with in the past.

Five steps that I would take to improve self-discipline are as follows.

  1. Be honest with yourself – when you are about to lose self-discipline or engage in a negative behaviour as yourself questions. By stopping and asking yourself questions you are both questioning your intentions and delaying the want to take part in the action\behaviour and you are less likely to engage in said action\behaviour.

  2. Value yourself and the promises you make to yourself as if they were promises to someone else. If you made a promise to someone else you would try your hardest to keep that promise and not let them down, this should be the same with the promises you make to yourself, you are as important as anyone else.

  3. Remember your goal often. Remember the reason you are embarking on this journey, daydream and get excited for the present and the future.

  4. Remember you always have a choice. Often we feel like we have no choice, whatever we are trying to change is inherently part of who we are and part of our identity. This is untrue, you always free to make a choice.

  5. Forgive yourself if you make a mistake. We are all human, we will all make mistakes. One mistake does not mean you have ruined everything, forgive yourself and jump back on that proverbial horse.
